They don’t know – OrissaPOST
It seems that no one in this country knows anything except those who hold absolute but temporary power. Bureaucracy has been the beacon of this mindset since colonial times. They were the very first to understand that the average brown-skinned native was incapable, given his limited intellectual capacities, of understanding what the goras knew of the universe. This thought process has continued to this day and time where even young people who have taken ONE test by UPSC that makes them “leaders” for life think they know it all. what there is to know. Most of the time, the bureaucracy thinks that the political class is indispensable except whoever leads it, because pleasing this leader becomes very important for them to advance their career. The political minions, however, have a different story to tell. They are far from having importance for the bureaucracy. Only personal relationships help them survive the upheavals most of them face on a daily basis.
The political class is an endangered species these days. Take for example the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States on the question Roe Vrs Wade. After drastically restricting the basic human rights of pregnant women by overturning a law that had stood for half a century, the USSC’s verdict has been condemned in the Western world, but the American politician is seen as a weakling who has very little of power over what social changes make to his career. While most Republicans have no choice but to support the anti-abortion ruling while opposing any changes to existing gun laws, Democrats likewise have no choice. choice but to oppose changes to abortion law while supporting changes to gun laws. In simpler terms, politicians of all hues are watched as little flags fluttering downwind with the slightest breeze. Downwind is where they all end up because very few dare to stand against the current. It is mainly a matter of convenience that drives politicians to do what they do.
Of course there are aberrations like the Ukrainian Volodymir Zelenskyy who seems to believe that his nation should be independent and his strength of character seems to have passed on to his compatriots who can be observed as real fighters in a real war . The USSC ruling on abortion did not remain limited to US shores. The sign of the times is that the regressive mindset is here to stay. At least for a little longer. Depriving women of a very basic right to control the reproductive activities of their own bodies smacks of a society that has corroded from deep within. Apparently, the Court has not bothered to delve into the issues that affect every individual in this country. With six of the nine judges riding together, conservatism seems to be back in fashion.
Some optimists, on the other hand, are convinced that even if the current global scenario seems to swing massively towards an anti-poor, hate-filled and intolerant society, the truth might lie elsewhere. They feel there is a great desire among the common citizen for a more equitable, tolerant and just social order and this could be the key to change.
Undoubtedly, courts, governments and politicians around the world all seem to have lost their credibility. Power supporters are seen as frightened and shy people filled with hatred for everyone. Those who oppose it are counted as rodents that must be exterminated at the first opportunity. With a global society diametrically opposed to what everyone thought was obvious and natural just a decade ago, the future may change. In which direction the dice are thrown, anyone can guess.
