One of America’s most visited national parks is right here in New Jersey
One thing I love is highlighting the many wonderful areas we have here on the Jersey Shore and around the beautiful Garden State that we can enjoy.
Yes we have places that need a good overhaul but that’s the case all over the world so let’s stick with the positive and maybe you didn’t even know this place was right here in your backyard .
According to a new article, the list of the top 10 most visited national parks has been released and one of the top 10 sites is right here on the Jersey Shore in Monmouth County. In the new report Gateway National Recreation Areapart of which is in Sandy Hook, came in fourth with 9.1 million visitors in 2021.
Sandy Hook Lighthouse and Fort Hancock are part of the beautiful Gateway National Recreation Area. So much history in Sandy Hook with the iconic lighthouse, built in 1764, and Fort Hancock, it’s definitely worth taking a day trip on a beautiful day to walk and see these Jersey Shore landmarks.
The first gun batteries were emplaced at Fort Hancock in 1896 and served the United States Army until 1950 as part of what were known as the New York Harbor Defenses.
If you’re looking to pack the family or class this spring and take a day trip up the Jersey Shore, put the Gateway National Recreation Area on your list and enjoy both the Sandy Hook Lighthouse and of Fort Hancock. There are also plenty of seaside towns in the Monmouth County area to explore as well. Here is the TOP 10 according to the CNN article.

2. Great Smoky Mountains National Park: 14.1 million
3. Golden Gate National Recreation Area: 13.7 million
4. Gateway National Recreation Area: 9.1 million
5. Lake Mead National Recreation Area: 7.6 million
6. George Washington Memorial Walk: 6.8 million
7. Natchez Trace Walk: 6.4 million
8. Lincoln Memorial: 5.8 million
9. Gulf Islands National Coastline: 5.5 million
10. Zion National Park: 5000000

Gateway National Recreation Area is one of the 10 most visited national parks in America and is located right here on the beautiful Jersey Shore in New Jersey.

Today, these parks are spread across the country in 25 states and the US Virgin Islands. The land around them was purchased or donated, although much of it was inhabited by natives for thousands of years before the founding of the United States. These areas are protected and revered as educational resources about the natural world and as spaces for exploration.
