Nagpur businessman dies after setting fire to family in car
A 58-year-old debt-ridden businessman committed suicide in Nagpur after setting himself and his family on fire in his car on Tuesday afternoon. While the man identified as Ramrao Bhat succumbed to his injuries, his wife Sangeeta (57) and son Nandan (25) survived, police said.
Police said the incident happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday after Bhat allegedly offered to take his family to lunch. “They left the house around 12:30 p.m. We learned that Bhat suddenly stopped the vehicle on the road near Khapri Punarvasan, locked the car doors using the central locking system, poured gasoline on it and set everyone on fire said a police officer.
Bhat stayed in the Jaitala area of Nagpur and worked in the welding business. Police said they found a suicide note in the car which revealed Bhat was facing a financial crisis.
After residents informed the police, firefighters arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire. While all three were rushed to hospital, doctors pronounced Bhat dead. His wife and son are still recovering.
“We suspect Bhat assumed that the money lenders would trouble his family if he committed suicide alone, which would have led to the killing of his family,” an officer said.
