Mumbai businessman calls underage girl ‘object’, pulls her by hair; sentenced to 1.5 years in prison
The court, while sentencing the youth to prison, observed that the word “article”, when used for a girl, is only meant to objectify her sexually and nothing else.
The court convicted the businessman of sexually harassing the 16-year-old girl, pulling her hair and addressing her saying, “Kya item kidhar ja rah ho” (Where are you going article ), according to a Times of India report. The incident allegedly took place in 2015 when the girl was returning home from school.
The convicted businessman stalked the girl with “sexual intent”.
The judge refused to release the defendant because of his good behavior and said such offenses should be dealt with with a heavy hand and should serve as a lesson to protect women from such people.
In his defence, the convict claimed that he had been falsely entrapped in the case because the girl’s parents were against her friendship with him. However, the court denied his request.
The girl was the only witness to testify in the case. According to her daughter’s statement, the accused came from behind and pulled her hair, and said the objectionable words as she walked home from school on July 14, 2015.
The girl said she pushed him away and warned him not to repeat his behavior. However, the accused started abusing her and told her to do whatever she wanted.
