Financial aid to traditional businessmen before Chaturthi is impossible: Phal Desai
An allowance of Rs 5,000 per trader would work up to a sum of Rs 50 crore
MARGAO: Stating that there is a requirement of Rs 50 crore, Social Affairs Minister Subhash Phal Desai said financial aid for traditional businessmen before Chaturthi is impossible.
Speaking to the media here, Phal Desai said lump sum financial aid of Rs 5,000 to traditional businessmen requires around Rs 50 crore to fund approved applicants. However, there is a provision of only Rs 20 crore under the scheme.
“A request has been made to the state government to increase this fund. All will be paid at once upon receipt of increased funds. However, it is not possible before Chaturthi,” he clarified.
He said a scheme has been launched by the Department of Social Welfare to provide financial relief to traditional business people who have suffered financial loss during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, had announced that the beneficiaries would receive the money from this program before Chaturthi. It was directed by Pramod Sawant. However, Minister Phal Desai explained that this is not possible. With just days to go until Chaturthi, Minister Phal Desai’s explanation has sparked outrage among mainstream businessmen.
“1.14 lakh applications have been received for the program. A fund of around 50 crore is required if payment is to be made to approved candidates. However, there is only a 20 crore provision for the program. Therefore, the provision of additional funds was requested. As soon as funds are received, beneficiaries will be paid immediately,” he explained.
