Governor Newsom Sends COVID-19 Winter Surge Warning – NBC Bay Area
In the lightly vaccinated Central Valley, Gov. Gavin Newsom insisted on Tuesday that people get vaccinated and pushed back those who will tell you otherwise.
“I recognize the fear many of us have as we move into winter, as we move into a season where, if the past is a prologue, we should anticipate an increase in cases,” he said. he declares.
The governor spoke at the Kings County Elementary School, highlighting the region’s low vaccination rate and the high rate of COVID-19.
Most medical experts agree with the need to increase vaccination rates, but there is no agreement that a winter wave has started.
“I really don’t see much evidence of the onset of a winter wave,” said Dr George Rutherford, professor of epidemiology at UCSF. “It may come later or not at all or it may stay at that high baseline we’ve been at since August.
But the health worker for Marin County, the most vaccinated county in the state, said the surge is already here.
“Overall, the increase at the local, regional and global levels sends the unfortunate message that our winter wave has started in Marin,” said Dr Matt Willis.
The governor said the magnitude of the winter wave depends on what people are doing right now.
“My belief is that if we can get these 5-10% more immunization rates, we’ll be in a whole different place,” Newsom said.
