Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan called on the Justice Department to take legal action against his own state, claiming its Democratic-controlled legislature violated the voting rights law with its new congressional districts.
“On Monday, the US Department of Justice announced it was suing Texas over its new redistribution plan, alleging violations of the 1965 Voting Rights Act,” Hogan’s office said in a press release. Thursday. “Today, Governor Hogan called on the Biden administration to immediately add the state of Maryland to this trial.”

While Hogan has vetoed the new legislature map, Democrats hold a qualified majority in both houses of the state house and are likely to override the veto.
“The map of Congress drawn behind the scenes by party leaders in Annapolis mocks our democracy, and it is a disgrace for everything our state stands for,” Hogan said in a statement. “On behalf of all the people of Maryland who value the fairness and integrity of our elections and our political system, I veto these illegal and shockingly destroyed cards, which constitute a violation shameful of federal and state law. “
The fight against the Maryland gerrymander comes after the DOJ files a lawsuit against Texas over its new congressional districts, arguing that the new map of the Republican-controlled legislature violates voting rights law by depriving minority voters of the right to vote.

Hogan said Maryland’s congressional map is “more glaring” than Texas’, arguing that her state should be added to the DOJ’s lawsuit against Texas.
Republicans accused the DOJ of acting in a partisan fashion by suing Texas but not targeting states with Democratic-led legislatures such as Maryland, with Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, claiming the department is controlled by the Democratic National Committee.
“I think it’s impressive how quickly the Justice Department has transferred operational control to the Democratic National Committee,” Cruz said Tuesday. âUnfortunately, under Joe Biden, the DOJ functions as a partisan arm to target the Red States rather than an impartial law enforcement agency.â
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton echoed Cruz’s comments later Tuesday, accusing the Biden administration of wanting to “control the Republican states.”

“They want to turn them into democratic states, and they will do it in any way they can – whether it hurts our economy by allowing the entry of illegal people who can cause crime and carry fentanyl, whether it be the transmission of COVID across the border, “Paxton said.” They are all aimed at enabling things and promoting things that hurt Republican states. “
The DOJ did not immediately return a request for comment from Fox News.
