The wife of former Ukrainian MP Igor Kotvitsky was caught bringing $28 million packed in suitcases to the Hungarian border on March 14, Ukrainian media reported.

Anastasia Kotvitska was at a checkpoint in Vylok, according to Obozrevatel, when Hungarian customs discovered the bags containing US dollar and euro cash in a minivan. In addition to 28 million dollars, the suitcases would also have been filled with 1.3 million euros.

Kotvitska was traveling with two Hungarian citizens as well as her mother Galina Kucher, sources Recount Obozrevatel.

A criminal case has now been opened by the State Investigation Bureau accusing Kotvitska of not declaring the money, according to the Ukrainian Pravda.

Kotvitska’s husband, who was once one of Ukraine’s richest politicians, said the story was untrue and that ‘her money would continue to be stored in Ukrainian banks’, explained an article published by Obozrevatel.

“I didn’t take anything back,” Kotvitsky said.

He Recount The Times that his wife was leaving Ukraine to give birth, but did not acknowledge that she had the money with her.

Businessman Seyar Kurshutov wrote about the incident in a Facebook post on March 20.

He said Ukrainian officials “didn’t notice” the bags.

“The Hungarians, in turn, noticed this and after many hours of clashes the amount had to be declared,” he wrote.
