Businessman, retired cop charged with kidnapping – Guyana newsroom
A 55-year-old retired police officer and 39-year-old businessman were released Friday on $200,000 bond for allegedly abducting a man from a popular bar in Kitty, Georgetown.
Kenneth Bahadur and Sameer Bacchus appeared before City Magistrate Leron Daly and both pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Details allege that on September 12, 2022, in Station Street, Kitty, the couple abducted Jagdesh Mangal.
Police prosecutor Christopher Morris told the court that Bahadur had already been charged with the offense last month, but the case was dropped and a joint charge was brought instead.
According to Morris, on the day in question, Mangal was at a popular Station Street bar, Kitty, when he was approached by Bahadur, Bacchus and two other male suspects.
According to Morris, Mangal was forced into the back seat of a vehicle and he quickly spun off. He was reportedly taken to a house in Georgetown where he was held at gunpoint and robbed.
The victim was allegedly robbed of a gold and diamond ring worth $1.5million, a gold and black diamond ring worth $1.2million and a chain in gold worth $900,000.
Mangal was allegedly forced to sign a note stating that he owed one of the suspects. He was then taken to a location on Church Street, where he was ordered out of the vehicle.
The prosecutor made no objection to the defendants being released on bail. Magistrate Daly released the men on $200,000 bond and adjourned the case until November 04.
