Bette Midler reacts to backlash over tweet attacking gender neutral language – Film News | Film-News.co.uk
Bette Midler responded to the criticism with a Twitter post in which she attacked the use of gender-neutral language.
On Monday, the Hollywood icon claimed women were being “erased” by the use of certain words to refer to transgender or non-binary people, while expressing concern over the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the United States Supreme Court late last month, which means heads of state can make abortion illegal.
Following a flurry of comments online, Bette took to Twitter on Tuesday to explain that her tweet was a response to a “fascinating” article published in The New York Times earlier this week.
“There was no exclusionary or transphobic intent in what I said; it wasn’t about that,” she began. “It was pretty much the same old shitty women – ALL WOMEN – that we’ve been supporting since cavemen. Even then, men were headlining. But seriously, folks, if anyone anyone reading this tweet thinks i have more than love for anyone who is marginalized, go to wikipedia and type my name.”
Bette went on to insist that she has always supported the LGBT community.
“As long as I can remember, I have fought for marginalized people. Yet if you want to dismiss my 60 years of love and concern over a tweet that accidentally irritated the people I always supported and adored, so be it,” the Beaches actress continued. But the truth is that democracy is slipping through our fingers! I’m all for trying to save democracy for ALL. We have to unite, because, in case you didn’t pay attention, divided, we will definitely fall.”
In response to Bette’s statement, US politician Stephanie Byers – the first openly transgender person to serve in the Kansas Legislature – called on her to do more.
“Bette, I am the first transgender Native American elected to a state legislature in the United States. People Against Trans Women are using your tweet as proof that even liberals are against the trans community. If not , say specifically trans men and women are men and women,” she fired.
