Republican Brian Kemp defeats Stacey Abrams in Georgia gubernatorial race
Our colleague Macarena Vidal Liy sends us this report from Atlanta, where she went to follow the Georgia race, one of the most disputed election nights in the United States:
“Republican Gov. Brian Kemp has won one of Georgia’s most anticipated election battles, one that pitted him against Democrat Stacey Abrams for the second time in four years. The Republican Representative won 53.8 percent of the vote (1,942,151) 88% counted, while its rival received 45.5%, 1,641,330.
Kemp has based his campaign on his promises to fight crime, one of the issues his constituents care most about, and to cut taxes as a measure against runaway inflation, for which he blames White House economic policies. .
The Republican had already won over Abrams in 2018 in an acrimonious contest in which the Democrat attributed her defeat to an “erosion of our democracy” which had prevented some of her supporters from voting. This time, Abrams phoned her rival to accept defeat.
Meanwhile, the recount continues in the fight that has garnered the most attention in Georgia, which pits Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock against Republican nominee Herschel Walker and who could decide control of the US House of Representatives. With 88% of the votes counted, only a few tens of thousands of votes separate the two candidates. Neither managed to secure 50% of the vote, the number needed to avoid a second round next month.”
